Aren’t they just crystals?
Some of us cannot determine the difference between cubic zirconias and gemstones. Using jewelry terms, cubic zirconias are man-made stones, while gemstones are produced naturally. Cubics are man-made, therefore, they come in various colours. They are also generally a lighter shade of a colour as compared to gemstones. On the other hand, gemstones are natural minerals and not a man-made substance. Thus, one type of gemstone may have different shades or tints of the colour. Each gemstone may differ from another slightly, in terms of colour. One may be lighter or darker than another. In terms of value, natural gemstones are more valuable as compared to cubic zirconia. Some of them are also known as birthstones, which represent different birth months. For example, the purple amethyst is the birthstone for February.
Similar to diamonds, cubic zirconias also have different grades as well. A higher grade cubic zirconia may sometimes even be brighter and whiter than a lower grade diamond. When comparing cubic zirconias and diamonds, colour can be used to distinguish between the two. Using a magnifying glass, it can be seen that a diamond will always have a small speck of colour, while a cubic zirconia, on the other hand, will be completely colourless.
